WEATHER -  Stormy weather this week especially on Friday and Saturday, very high winds and driving rain over the next couple of days. WIND -  Very strong winds on Friday and Saturday, predominantly North Easterly on Friday and Westerly on saturday, ranging up to the 30 mph speeds. Leveling off through the week around 10-12mph and generally Westerly then changing on Wednesday and Thursday with winds up to 20 mph North Easterlies on Thursday.
SEA STATE and SWELL -   The rougher seas in the area will be mainly on Saturday with big winds and big swells through the whole region. Weather has definitely turned for the worse over the past few days and will continue into next week. High winds and heavy rain will affect all areas along the South Wales coast for Scuba Diving with entrance and exit conditions becoming harder and possible unsafe in certain areas. Visibility will also be lacking after the wind, swell and rainfall . The better option would be to head inland to the protected scuba diving sites which are far more protected from the elements and visability will be better. We are running the PADI Open Water Diver programme accross the South Wales region and have several students now ready to go onto complete the four Open Water Qualifying dives for the full PADI Open Water Diver Certification. This will be held either on the coast if conditions are suitable or inland at dedicated diving facilities.

The weather has been consistently dry over the past few days and winds light, however the winds are getting stronger through the week and the swell bigger. This will cause rough conditions inshore for diving areas especially on the South Wales coast and also effect the visibility at all diving locations. Winds are especially high on Tuesday causing high seas and very rough coastal conditions unsuitable for diving in the area especially around Cardiff and Swansea.

The weather and the wind conditions look good at the moment for Westerly facing sites, the only issue may be the swell which is consistent 2 - 5 feet. The visibility will be minimal and inshore conditions not the best. May be accessible in some very protected areas such as Stackpole Quay in Camarthenshire. Local Cardiff and Swansea sites may have too much swell to work.

We are running the PADI Open Water Diver Course this weekend at Hebron Hall on the outskirts of Cardiff. Students from accross South Wales will be heading to the confined Water training session to complete the PADI course. We are also running the PADI Divemaster course as part of the continuing educational programme.

There has been a constant swell all week around the coastline of Wales, this will affect the visability of all diving locations. This week the swell is lower up until Wednesday when the wind and the swell is picking up significantly. Entrance and exit points are acceptable on the sheltered beaches such as Limeslade bay in Swansea up until the wind and swell increase by the middle of the week, so best conditions are the weekend and the beginning of the week. We have our comprehensive PADI Open Water Course systems running and the pool session is being held in Hebron Hall in Dinas Powys. The next pool session for the course is to be held on 11th May 2019.

The wind has been predominately Easterly giving good calm conditions to Westerly facing beaches and entrance points such as Limeslade bay in Swansea and Stackpole Quay. Easterly beaches will get the brunt of the bad conditions. Also consistent swell throughout the region fitting the Westerly beaches unless completely protected. Would have to enter on the high tide on the incoming tides 2-3 hours after the low incoming water. Levels of ability unless under training should be PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, PADI Rescue diver or above with sufficient coastal knowledge of diving in the South Wales waters,

Conditions are looking very good for the next few days, light winds, calm seas, afternoon tides, little swell so the perfect conditions for scuba diving in the South Wales region. All sites close to Cardiff, Swansea, Llanelli and Stackpole Quay should be working well, maybe changing on Wednesday when the winds start picking up.

This is the time to use the PADI Open Water Diver qualification to sample sea diving at its best in the UK. For those more adventureous then the PADI Advanced Open Water course may be more suitable.

As you may have gathered the winter season does not provide the best conditions for scuba diving in the South Wales region especially around Newport, Cardiff, Swansea and Tenby areas, the winds are high, gusty and variable, swells and surf are consistantly bigger, weather is colder and visibility hard to come by. This week is no exception the swell is high, the winds are big, the visibility is low and big tides.

However there is always the back up of the inland sites to dive in and also trips abroad especially winter destinations such as Egypt, South Africa, Caribbean. As always we are training people through the PADI system for there PADI Open Water Diver Course, the PADI Open Water Referral diver course and all other courses in the system. Ten students have just been trained up to the Referral system and preparing for their Open Water qualifying dives.

Conditions Report for Scuba Diving in Cardiff, Swansea & South Wales

Wow! What a weekend we had in South Wales last weekend. Massive swell and gale force winds. This weekend see's things return to a more normal situation and could actually see acceptable conditions for diving on certain parts of the South Wales coast, particularly on Saturday.

We're expecting winds to be reasonably gentle and in an Easterly / Northerly direction, meaning we have fairly small swell and the wind shouldn't be causing too many visibility problems. The tidal movement, whilst still large compared to many places in the UK, is reasonably small for the South Wales coast which will also help with visibility and dive times.

So, Saturday you should have the option of most of the dive sites in the Gower, such as Limeslade Bay or Oxwich Bay. You will also have the option to head a little further west and dive some of the bays out there, such as Martins Haven and St Brides Bay. Sunday conditions could become more troublesome as wind and swell size may increase.

As always it's important to plan your dive around the tide, remembering the rule of twelfths and looking to dive on slack water or an incoming tide.

Scuba Diving Training in Cardiff, Swansea & South Wales

There's no training for us this weekend after last weeks PADI Open Water Diver and PADI Rescue Diver courses. We're very pleased to say that all of our students passed their courses last weekend. This gives the Open Water students the ability to dive anywhere in the world up to 18m and we're hoping to see them back soon for their PADI Advanced Open Water course, allowing them to improve their skills in buoyancy and also dive up to 30m anywhere in the world.

Our PADI Rescue Divers now have he knowledge to deal with various situations they could find themselves in, provide first responder first aid care and assist in diver rescues should the need ever arise. It's a tough course that will allow them to move onto working towards the first PADI professional course, PADI Divemaster should they wish to, so they should be proud of their achievements.

CAUTIONS – It's summer but the British sea temperatures will still only be around the 12 degree mark, so we'll still need to take precautions with regards to thermal protection (wetsuits, drysuits, hoods, gloves).
